When Your Kid Loves Cars and Everything with Wheels: Part 1
If your kid is anything like mine, he’ll love making this town together with you. It’s simple and best of all, it’s cheap but that’s not all, there’s lot of games and fun learning that you can do with it. Part 1 of When Your Kid Loves Cars and Everything With Wheels is how you can make your own little town. So let’s begin!
Making The Road
Simply cut up thick card paper that you can get at any stationary shop. You can get an A4 stack or the larger sheets. I prefer the larger sheets as it allows me to cut different shaped roads like roundabouts and turns. I make each part of my road pretty short as you can see so that Hisham can rearrange his roads anyway he likes just as he would his train tracks. Then cut small strips of yellow paper for the road markings. Hisham helped me glue this to the road. You’re basically done unless you want to laminate it first so that it lasts longer. Use sticky tape at the bottom of the paper to stick it to the floor. My floors are tiles so except for a few sticky marks to remove, my floor isn’t damaged.
Car Parks
Car parks are a must. I placed this outside a building made out of an old box. This is a shopping mall. The smaller box on the right was an old lightbulb box with some cardboard stuck to it for a slide. It doesn’t have to be fancy or look like something out of Pinterest. Keep it simple as I always say and have fun.
Traffic lights
What would a road be without traffic lights? Here, is I used a wooden clothes pin to hold it up and stuck it to an old Alphabet block for support. The cardboard and cloth pin was coloured black using black markers by Hisham and then I cut the traffic light colour out of felt cloth and let Hisham glue it on the traffic light. We made a few of these to put all around our town.
Road Signs
Road signs add some fun to our road works. I used some parts from On-U-Mind Creative Blocks and some sticky tape to help prop this sign up.

Muddy Puddles
Hisham loves Peppa Pig so muddy puddles was a must!
The mud was made from felt cloth and cut an irregular shape.
Cars Wash and gas station
We must have a gas station to fuel up all those cars! It’s a gas station, car wash and garage all in one. This one was from IKEA. Any other toy you already have can be added to your little town. If you don’t have any just make some with some recycled boxes. Cut a small door and it’s done.
The construction site
Some uncoloured homemade play dough acts as sand here for our construction site.
School
This is our school. It was part of Melissa n Doug’s Set from Toys R Us School Bus Set. Hisham loves it when we put a flash light inside the box for light when school is on.
I hope this posts gives you some ideas on how to build your own town. Remember, keep it simple and have fun!
